New Books for 2008
Dingo (2008) Dingo
Viking, March 2008
High school senior Miguel's life is turned upside down when he meets new girl Lainey, whose family has just moved from Australia. With her tumbled red-gold hair, her instant understanding of who he is, and her unusual dog—with fur the same colour as her hair—Lainey is unforgettable. And, as he quickly learns, she is on the run from an ancient bargain made by her ancestors. There's no question that Miguel will do whatever he can to help her—but what price will each of them have to pay?

Dingo will be published in hardcover in the spring of 2008 as part of a five year anniversary celebration for Firebird Books.

Yellow Dog (2008) Yellow Dog
Subterranean Press, May 2008
Subterrananean Press is doing another one of my Triskell Press chapbooks. This a story which takes place in the American Southwest. Yellow Dog will be printed in two colors throughout, with a cover and several interior illustrations by me.

Yellow Dog will be available as a chapbook or a hardcover. You can get more information here.

What the Mouse Found (2008) What the Mouse Found
Subterranean Press, 2008
A collection of obscure and unpublished children's stories, most of which were based on soft sculptures and dolls made by MaryAnn, and were written for the kids who received the art. Included in the book are photos of the pieces that inspired the stories, with a cover featuring my niece Kmoré as the model, illustrating the introduction, "Kissing Frogs."

What the Mouse Found is a hardcover. You can get more information here.

New Books for 2007
Little (Grrl) Lost (2007) Little (Grrl) Lost
Viking, September 2007
Little (Grrl) Lost germinated from the short story of the same title that first appeared in Firebirds Rising, but you don't need to go track that book down since the story appears as the first chapter in the novel.

There are two entwined plotlines in the novel. One answers Elizabeth's question of what to do when you've got a lot of attitude, but you're a Little in a big world, standing only six inches tall. But being a Big, as Elizabeth's full-sized friend T.J. is, doesn't mean that everything in your life is automatically going to go any smoother.

Especially when your Little is lost.

Little (Grrl) Lost is a hardcover.

Promises to Keep (2007) Promises to Keep
Subterranean Press, September 2007
After Widdershins, I thought I wouldn't write at length about Jilly again. I'd promised one more short story about her for Bill at Subterranean Press, but that would be it.

Having left her in a good place at the end of Widdershins, I didn't want to complicate her life yet again, so I planned to set the story earlier in her life, during her first year as a student at Butler University.

Except the story grew. I was having too much fun visiting with this younger Jilly, so I asked Bill if I could expand it and swap it for the "Newford retrospective" collection that he'd contracted with me. He agreed, and that's how Promises to Keep came to be.

The book takes place in 1972 and begins with Jilly getting a surprise visit from an old friend—her only friend—from her runaway days. Interspersed with the main story that leads off from that meeting are flashbacks to pivotal moments in her life: time spent in the Home for Wayward Girls, her life on the street, meeting and working with the Grasso Street Angel, the first time she meets various familiar faces (Geordie, Sophie, etc.). You'll find out how the messed-up street kid she was grew a social conscience, and became the cheerful character we know from later stories.

Promises to Keep is a hardcover. You can get more information here.

I hope this finds you all happy, snug and cozy as we ride out another long winter. Here in Ottawa, we've broken all records for snowfall and I'm glad we bought ourselves a small snowblower last November.

Are we already almost at the end of another year? Is it really Christmas tomorrow? I don't practice any organized religion, but I still like Christmas because people are usually in a better mood than usual at this time of year. You almost get the feeling that we could all get along in this old world of ours.

So from our household to yours, no matter what faith you practice, we wish you Merry Christmas and the best for the upcoming new year.

I really enjoyed meeting all of you who came out to the various signings on the recent short tour for Widdershins—thanks so much for your support. Mythic Journeys was a fabulous ending to it all.

But it's not completely over. While we were in Atlanta for Mythic Journeys, MaryAnn and I recorded some music and conversation for Anne Strainchamps' To the Best of Our Knowledge show which will be broadcast on Wisconson Public Radio on Sunday, June 18th. It's a special show with a Midsummer Night's Eve theme that also features our good friend Holly Black. You can get more info at:

http://www.wpr.org/book/060618a.html

You can also listen to the show on-line, or pull it up from their archives if you happen to miss it while it's airing.

FIND OUT WHY

The Don't! Buy! Thai! site is still active, but it has now been incorporated within the larger issue of children's rights worldwide. For more information on what's being done, and what you can do, check out the Captive Daughters site.

Americans concerned with children's rights issues, might want to familiarize themselves with the CareAct.

In most states the penalty for an adult who rapes a child is twenty years plus—unless that adult happens to be related to the child—in which case the maximum sentence could be probation. There is legislation now pending in Congress to change all this. IF YOU CARE, ACT! Find out more at: www.CareAct.org
