Crow Girls

When my niece Kmoré was about 14 years old, I loved seeing just how tight she was with her girlfriends. She lived with her folks in a rural log home, so to hang with the girls she had to plead for rides into town—30 minutes away. And plead she did, but my brother Jim and his wife Hanny are great parents who willingly ferried their daughter back and forth to let her enjoy her social life. Around the same time, Charles had written his novel Someplace to be Flying (one of my favourites). The Crow Girls are such capricious characters. I wrote this song for Kmoré, doing my best to portray that wild and beautiful teen spirit. The Crow Girls just nosed their way in, for which I'm grateful.

My nails painted black and my nose has a ring
I am young, out for fun, living life on the wing
And my buddies are wild, yeah, we hang in a crowd
We are looking for action, we're bold, we are loud

Yeah we're raucous, they knock us, they say we're bad luck
Just a pest with a nest but we don't give a …
Cause we're flyin', cryin' in that crow-crazy way
Tell me, who is more free at the end of the day?

Chorus:
One stands for sorrow, two bring you mirth
Three for a wedding, four for a birth
Five bring you silver, six give you gold
Seven, a secret never to be told

Tell me baby, have you seen a crow girl like me
Now shifting, now lifting away on that breeze
Does it make your heart long for those black shiny wings
To rise up in the sky, to give life to your dreams

    Chorus

Yeah we're raucous, they knock us, they say we're bad luck
Just a pest with a nest but we don't give a …
Cause we're flyin', we're cryin' in that crow-crazy way
Tell me, who is more free at the end of the day?

Bridge:
Eight are for heaven, nine stand for hell
Ten for the devil, or so they do tell

So the next time you see me, remember my song
When you see me a-sailing on wings black and long
Keep your feet planted firm on the ground that you know
But let your spirit go soaring with me, with the crow
Let your spirit go soaring with me, with the crow.
